Acne, Acne, Acne

oh Acne… we thought we’d be free from this once we left our teenager years.

The agony of having to deal with acne in our adult years - well, the reality is that EVERYONE can be affected by acne.

Acne does not discriminate, it is a common skin condition that has been around for centuries.

According to Statistics Canada, 5.6 million individuals are affected by acne - that’s 20% of the population!

The most common areas that people have trouble with acne is their face, back & chest.

Let me tell you something about healing acne.

I’m sure you’ve heard it before however, you’re skin gets worse before it gets better.

Your skin will go through the purging stage & release all the bacteria between the cell layers to the top of the surface in order to get rid of the underlying issue - acne.

What Causes Acne?

Acne is caused by a complex interaction between androgens, increased sebum production, & inflammation with subsequent colonization of acne.

Acne happens when there is an increase in your skin sebum, which means that you cannot have no oil & have acne.

Dry skin can not produce acne since oil is necessary when talking about acne.

It is important to continue a good skincare routine in order to improve your skins health.

Relationship With Food & Acne.

There is an association between diet & acne.

Foods that have a higher glycemic index leads to hyperinsulinemia which causes more damage to the skin.

According to the Academy of Dermatology, milk makes acne worse & it is being brought to our attention more everyday. “The presumptive reasoning, which is almost Talmudic in approach, suggests that skim milk leads to increased insulin, and insulin-like growth factor-1, which increases 5a- re-educates, leading to increased androgens (gonadal and adrenal), causing increased sebaceous excretion, resulting in acne (1). “

 Remedies:

With so many solutions to choose from on the market to help with acne, it is important to be patient & remember that it takes 6 weeks to heal.

I prefer to use a salicylic spot treatment over benzoyl peroxide due to the fact that it is non drying & more gentle. Retinol/retina, light therapy, & antibiotics are also all great remedies to help with with acne.

Deep cleaning facials with extractions are also a great way to give the skin a deep clean from within.

I suggest booking a skin consult with an aesthetician to really take a good look & understand your lifestyle in order to get a custom plan.
